Announced Mar. 1, 2004, the sequencing and assembling of the Red Jungle Fowl was done at Washington University Genome Sequencing Center (WUGSC) with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the United States of America (U.S.A.). The analysis and annotation are conducted by scientist across USA, Europe and with scientists from Beijing Genomics Institute. For further information please go to the chicken genome web site of WUGSC <http://genome.wustl.edu/projects/chicken/>. The chicken genome variation map was announced on Mar. 1, 2004. Three million shotgun genome sequences were produced at Beijing Genomics Institute from a broiler strain from UK, a layer strain from Sweden, and a Silkie strain from China. About two million genomic variations, mainly single-nucleotide polymorphisms, have been identified from these strains. An international team of scientists, from China, USA, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, is conducting the analysis of these variation and the results are expected to be published this summer. The project was supported by CAS, MOST, and NSFC in China, and the Wellcome Trust in Britain.
